MOSCOW, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Clean energy produces about 84 percent of electricity in Russia for the moment and the figure is expected to reach 90 percent by 2035, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.
"Russia's energy balance is one of the cleanest among the world's largest economies," the president said while addressing a plenary session of the Russian Energy Week (REW), which kicked off in Moscow on Oct. 3.
According to Putin, currently over one-third of Russia's electricity is produced with nuclear energy, hydroelectric energy and other renewable energy sources, while about 50 percent of it is generated with natural gas, which helps to significantly reduce emissions.
The renewable energy power generation in Russia will increase several-fold in the next two decades in accordance with Russia's national energy strategy, he said.
"The ongoing change in Russia's energy balance will reduce domestic oil consumption, and the methods for coal use will become more environmentally friendly," Putin said.
The REW, being held in Moscow and St. Petersburg, will end on Oct. 10. During the forum, participants will discuss prospects for the development core sectors of the economy including oil, gas, coal and petrochemical industries.
More than 8,000 representatives of government authorities, domestic and foreign companies, scientific and expert community and roughly 1,000 media representatives are taking part in the forum. Representatives from more than 70 countries were invited.
