RIYADH, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Sudan appreciated Saudi Arabia for its role in lifting U.S. economic sanctions on Sudan, Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir expressed the appreciation in a phone call to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The crown prince congratulated the president on lifting of the sanctions, hoping that this decision will contribute to the development and stability of Sudan.

The United States announced on Friday to lift the sanctions on Sudan, attributing it to improvements in Sudan's human rights and counter-terrorism acts.

The United States added that Sudan would remain on the U.S. list of states sponsoring terrorism, and that some of the sanctions on Darfur would remain.

According to a report published this week by Al Arabiya local news, Saudi Arabia has contributed to persuading the U.S. administration to lift the 20-year long sanctions.
