TEHRAN, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran will stop implementing Additional Protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if the nuclear agreement is nixed, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said on Sunday.
"If the JCPOA (the acronym for nuclear deal) collapses, we will suspend the implementation of the Additional Protocol because we are now implementing it voluntarily," Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by Press TV.
Salehi stressed that Iran is committed to the inspections by UN watchdog and meets its obligations only under the JCPOA and will not accept any other conditions beyond that.
The Iranian atomic official made the comments as a response to the recent remarks by the U.S. President Donald Trump who urged Iran to allow access to its military sites for further assurance of the implementation of 2015 nuclear deal on Iran's side.
"If one day the Iranian authorities see that the JCPOA has no more benefits for our country and decide to resume the 20-percent enrichment (of uranium) at Fordow (facility), we can begin it in four days," Salehi added.
Last month, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would by no means have an access to Iran's classified information.
Based on the Additional Protocol, Iran's nuclear deal and the framework of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog can only inspect Iranian sites built for nuclear activities, Zarif said.
