CARACAS, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four opposition governors from the Democratic Action (AD) party swore an oath in front of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), the legislative body announced on Monday.

"Governors of Democratic Action swore an oath and submitted to the ANC," said a message on the body's Twitter account, accompanied by a photo.

This was a controversial move by the AD governors, as the opposition alliance, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), to which the AD belongs vowed to never swear an oath to the ANC, which it views as unconstitutional.

In regional elections on Oct. 15, the ruling party won 18 governorships, while the opposition won five, four for AD, and one for the Justice First party.

AD won in the states of Anzoategui, Nueva Esparta, Tachira and Merida while Justice First won the governorship of the state of Zulia.

However, despite the ANC statement about the four governors, there has been no official confirmation about it from the AD's secretary-general or any other official spokesperson.

On Oct. 18, the 18 winning governors from the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela took an oath before the ANC, while all five opposition winners refused to participate.

In recent days, President Nicolas Maduro had threatened to hold the elections again in states where the opposition won, if they refused to swear the oath.
