PHNOM PENH, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen decided on Friday to postpone the Senate election to Feb. 25 next year.
The fourth Senate election was originally scheduled for Jan. 14, 2018.
In a decision released on Friday, the prime minister said the date change was made at the request of Interior Minister Sar Kheng, without giving further details.
Held every six years, the Senate election will be held by Members of Parliament and commune councilors across the country.
Founded in 1999, the Senate, or the upper house, has 61 seats, but only 57 senators will be elected, as two senators are appointed by King Norodom Sihamoni and the other two by the Parliament's lower house.
In the last election held in January 2012, Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party won 46 seats against 11 seats for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.
The Sam Rainsy Party merged with the Human Rights Party in late 2012 to form a new Cambodia National Rescue Party, which is now the country's main opposition.
