OSLO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A man in his 50s was detained in western Norway after police found between 250 and 300 guns at his place, in what could be one of the country's largest weapon confiscations, broadcaster TV2 reported Friday.
The man, who was detained on Oct. 20 in Sunnmore district court in the western Norwegian county of More and Romsdal, is charged with gross unlawful dealing with firearms.
Among the seized weapons, police found AK-47, AR-15, Uzi, M16 and Thompson guns.
"This is a big seizure. We have found between 250 and 300 weapons. We currently do not know how many weapons are functional, but we are talking mainly about automatic weapons," said police inspector Yngve Skovly.
"So far, there is no evidence that these weapons were thought to be used for terror or to carry out other serious criminal offenses. But with such a volume, we are of course afraid that it would end up in the wrong hands," he said.
Police started the operation after receiving information from the Norwegian Customs, TV2 reported.
The man's defender, Hakon Rasmussen, told TV 2 that his client has pleaded guilty and that he has "collaborated with the police."
"He wants to clarify the matter as quickly and efficiently as possible. He has explained to the police that he is very interested in weapons and that he has collected them," the lawyer said.
