WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. forces have captured a militant in Libya who is believed to have played a role in the September 11, 2012 attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya, the White House said on Monday.

The militant, who was identified as Mustafa al-Imam, was captured on Sunday in Libya and will face charges in the United States, said U.S. President Donald Trump in the statement.

Al-Imam has been charged with "killing a person in the course of an attack on a federal facility" and providing "material support to terrorists resulting in death," reported U.S. media citing a statement from the U.S. Justice Department.

The United States will continue to support its partners in Libya to ensure that the Islamic State and other terrorist groups do not use Libya "as a safe haven for attacks against" U.S. citizens and others, said the White House statement.

A militant group called Ansar Al-Sharia linked to Al-Qaeda attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 11, 2012, killing ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. officials.
