TOKYO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The 30th Tokyo International Film Festival closed Friday with the top prize going to a sci-fi work by Turkish director, while a Chinese film won the award for best artistic contribution.
A total of 15 works from around the world competed in the main section of the festival, and "Grain" by Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu won the 50,000-U.S. dollar Tokyo Grand Prix.
The film, telling the story of a professor embarking on a trip to find a grain to save humankind in a world beset by food shortages, touches on many contemporary issues, including the refugee crisis and environmental problems.
Chinese film The Looming Storm directed by Dong Yue and starring Duan Yihong and Jiang Yiyan, won the award for best artistic contribution, and Duan Yihong won the award for best actor for his performance in the film.
The Chinese film noir dealing with love and destiny tells the story of Yu, a self-assured factory guard, who fancies himself a detective and begins poking his nose into a murder investigation, only to find things getting more and more complicated.
The special jury prize went to Italian film "Crater," which depicts the efforts of a father to make his daughter a star singer in order to escape poverty.
Edmund Yeo from Malaysia won the best director award for his film "We the Dead," while the best actress award went to French actress Adeline D'Hermy in "Maryline."
In the Asian Future section, Japanese film "Passage of Life" won both the Best Asian Future Film Award which aims to recognize aspiring new directors from Asia, and the Spirit of Asia Award by the Japan Foundation Asia Center.
The Tokyo International Film Festival started in 1985 as Japan's first major film festival. During the 10-day event this year, over 200 films were screened at theaters in the Roppongi Hills and other areas in Tokyo.
