CHANGCHUN, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 160 pieces of carved Songhua jade have gone on display in northeast China's Jilin Province.

The exhibit in Changchun, capital of Jilin, opened on Saturday with 168 pieces created by jewelers from China and Europe.

Songhua jade is only found at Changbai Mountain in the province. There are only 28 tonnes of Songhua jade which can be used for ornamental purposes.

Songhua jade was seen as national treasure until 300 years ago and was made into inkstones for emperors or as awards for emperors' offspring and meritorious officials.

The material was not rediscovered and exploited until the 1980s.
