NEW DELHI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a car in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

The accident occurred in Saharanpur district, more than 500 km from state capital Lucknow.

"The impact of the collision was such that five occupants of the car died on the spot. Some injured passengers of the bus have been admitted to a local hospital," a police official said.

Eye-witnesses told police the bus was travelling at high speed and the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the head-on collision with the car coming from opposite direction.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident. The driver of the bus fled the spot and a manhunt launched to track him down. He will be booked for rash and negligent driving," the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
