NEW DELHI, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than 20 people were injured in a road accident in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Monday.

"The accident occurred late Sunday night when a passenger bus overturned after skidding off a highway in Samba district in Jammu region," a senior police official said.

The injured included the passengers as well as the driver and the conductor of the bus, all of whom have been admitted to a local hospital, he said.

The victims were coming back from a pilgrimage from the neighboring state of Punjab.

Eyewitnesses told cops the accident occurred when the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle while trying to avert a head-on collision with a speeding car coming from the other side.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
