11,000 new HIV infections recorded in Myanmar last year

YANGON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- About 11,000 new HIV infections were recorded in Myanmar last year, U Myint Htwe, union minister for health and sports, said at a ceremony marking the World AIDS Day in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

The HIV prevalence among them is at 29 percent for people who inject drugs, 23 percent for male sex partners of male sex workers, 13 percent for men who have sex with other men and 7 percent for female sex workers, accounting for 70 percent of total new HIV infections.

As of the end of June this year, about 135,000 people living with HIV are being provided Lifelong Antiretroviral Therapy (Lifelong ART) service which was introduced in 2005.

Under the management of the ministry, a total of 14 million U.S. dollars were allocated for purchasing medicines and medical equipments used for Lifelong ART service in current 2017-2018 fiscal year.
