"Situation safe" at Schiphol, man threatening with knife shot by police

THE HAGUE, Dec. 15 (xinhua) -- A man who threatened with a knife was shot and taken away by the Dutch military police at Schiphol airport on Friday afternoon and the situation at the airport is now "safe", Dutch military police announced.

With a knife, the man walked into the office of Marechaussee, the Dutch military police, at Schiphol Plaza, a large hall of meeting and shopping area before passport control. He was shot in the leg by the Marechaussee, or military police, and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The man would have smashed a window; the situation is safe now and the motive of the man is unknown yet, reported Dutch television NOS.

The area of Schiphol Plaza was evacuated for 20 minutes. The area is now open again.

The incident has had no impact on air traffic, said the Schiphol spokesperson.
