RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian Labor Minister Ronaldo Nogueira resigned on Wednesday evening to take part in general elections scheduled for October, 2018.
The Labor Ministry announced this Wednesday after a meeting between the minister and Brazilian President Michel Temer.
On the same day, the Labor Ministry announced that Brazil lost 12,000 formal jobs in November, the first month after the approval of Brazil's new labor regulations.
The new labor regulations were proposed by the government as an essential measure to help Brazil tackle unemployment and overcome the economic crisis, as well as to make old rules more flexible and adaptable to the 21st century.
Critics said the reform will make labor relations more fragile and cut back on workers' rights, allowing employers to coerce workers into accepting less favorable and exploitative conditions.
Several large companies are engaged in mass dismissal of old employees in order to hire new employees under the new regulations, which basically allow employers to pay less for the same work.
In the first 11 months of this year, Brazil saw a net generation of 299,635 jobs.
From December 2016 to November 2017, the country witnessed a loss of 178,528 formal jobs. Enditem
