LISBON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa woke up "in good spirits" in hospital on Friday, after having undergone umbilical hernia surgery late on Thursday.
The president's website said that the post-operation recovery process was proceeding without complications.
Intervention surgery had been programmed for January, but the president's doctor detected a strangulated hernia that required emergency treatment.
The president cancelled all official engagements through to Jan. 1 and entered the Curry Cabral hospital in Lisbon on Thursday afternoon.
Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, who as President of the Assembly of the Republic is placed second in the nation's hierarchy, visited the president in hospital on Friday. He told local reporters that he'd found the president working, having turned his hospital room into a makeshift office.
Rebelo de Sousa is expected to be discharged from hospital on Sunday.
