NEW DELHI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Famous Indian film actor Rajinikanth Sunday announced his entry into politics, saying he will launch his own party soon.
The superstar from southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu said his joining politics was need of hour and compulsion of time.
"I will do my duty. It is time. We will change the system," the 67-year-old declared in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. "If I don't make this decision now, the guilt will haunt me."
Rajinikanth announced his decision while addressing fans on the valedictory of a six-day-long meet.
According to him his party will contest the next local elections in Tamil Nadu scheduled in 2021.
Rajinikanth said truthfulness, hard work and growth will be the slogan of his party.
The veteran actor enjoys cult status in Tamil cinema and is seen as a demigod by his fans.
