GENEVA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Visitors to the iconic train station at the "top of Europe" in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland known as the Jungfraujoch topped one million in 2017, the railway company carrying passengers there said on Friday.

The Jungfrau Railway Group attributed part of the increase in visitors to greater demand from Asian tourists, following the intensification of its "active involvement in Asian markets" as well as an early first snowfall that drew visitors.

The alpine Jungfrau train station welcomed 1.042 million visitors last year, a 13.6 percent increase over 2016, Jungfrau Railways said.

The rail station there sits at an altitude of 3,454 metres and is the highest in Europe.

The Jungfrau Railway's cogwheel train provides the only public access to the site.

The Interlaken-based railway company said this was a new record, and the second time in the company's history that more than one million visitors have been counted. This landmark was first recorded in 2015 with 1,007 million.

The Jungfraujoch is the glacial saddle connecting the Jungfrau and Monch mountain peaks in the Bernese Alps, and is a popular tourist and winter sport destination.
