Canadian stock market down after weekly gain

TORONTO, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Canadian main stock index fell Friday after a weekly rally due to losses among natural resource stocks.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index declined 63.5 points, or 0.39 percent, to close the day at 16,349.44. Half the index' s 10 main groups finished were down.

The Canadian dollar edged up 0.049 cents to 0.80.55 U.S. dollar.

The energy sector dropped 2.3 percent. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd CNQ.TO dipped 2.5 percent to 45.36 Canadian dollars and Suncor Energy Inc SU.TO lost 1.5 percent to 46.93 Canadian dollars.

The materials sector, which includes precious and base metals miners and fertilizer companies, edged down 0.9 percent, with Barrick Gold Corp ABX.TO down 1.3 percent to 18.55 Canadian dollars.

Brookfield Business Partners LP BBU.TO rose 5 percent to 47.35 Canadian dollars. but its parent company, Brookfield Asset Management Inc BAMa.TO, slipped 0.8 percent to 54.16 Canadian dollars.

Canopy Growth Co WEED.TO soared 5.2 percent to 34 Canadian dollars and Aphria Inc APH.TO jumped 3.6 percent to 19.16 Canadian dollars. Aurora Cannabis Inc ACB.TO added 2.4 percent to 13.35 Canadian dollars.
