BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- At least two thirds of people who had one experience of the cigarette later become daily smokers, according to a recent study published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

The research data was collected from 215,000 people from UK, U.S., Australia and New Zealand, who responded to eight surveys during the period 2000 to 2016.

Analysis of the data showed 60.3 percent of those who took the survey had tried smoking, among whom 68.9 percent continued to smoke in later days.

Authors of the study said the research result demonstrated the importance of stopping cigarette experimentation.

The research, though, has some limitations. The result has a margin of error as different methodologies were used in the surveys.

There is also concern about the accuracy of people’s recall of their smoking history.
