NEW DELHI, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Four sitting senior judges of India's top court Friday said the administration of the Supreme Court was not in order and "many things less than desirable" have happened in the past few months.

"We went to Chief Justice of India (CJI) saying certain things are not normal and sought remedial measures," Justice Chelameswar, one of the four judges said while addressing the press.

It is for the first time in the history of Indian judiciary that four sitting judges have come in open to highlight rift in judiciary.

Justice Chelameswar told media they went to CJI but to no avail.

"The administration of the Supreme Court is not in order," Justice Chelameswar said. "We thought we are responsible to the nation and owe a responsibility to the institution."

Justice Chelameswar was flanked by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan Lokur and Justice Kurien Joseph.

All four had written to the Chief Justice of India earlier and circulated their letter in media.

"We tried to collectively persuade the CJI so that he takes remedial measures but our efforts have failed," Justice Chelameswar said. "We are left with no choice but talk to the nation directly."

It is very unusual for senior judges in India to interact with the media while they are in office.

The judges told media assignment of cases was one of the issues they were perturbed with.

The Supreme Court of India is the highest judicial forum and final court of appeal under the constitution of India, consisting of the chief justice and other 25 sanctioned judges.
