Local investors lift Kenya's bourse

NAIROBI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) was vibrant on Tuesday, boosted by local investors, with both turnover and the benchmark index closing higher.

Local investors accounted for 51 percent of the total turnover while foreigners contributed 49 percent.

Turnover rose 36 percent to settle at 5.3 million U.S. dollars on a volume of 17 million shares from 16 million shares worth 3.9 million dollars in the previous session.

Similarly, the NSE 20 Share Index was up 7.47 points to close at 3,711.23 points while the NSE All Share Index (NASI) rose 0.46 points to close at 177.83 points.

Safaricom, Equity Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), East African Breweries Ltd and NIC Bank accounted for 87 percent of the total turnover.

The most traded counters were, however, Safaricom, Equity Bank, KCB, Kenya Power and NIC Bank moving 7.3 million, 2.3 million, 1.7 million, 1.1 million and 700,000 shares respectively.

Bond turnover increased to stand at 11 million dollars from 12 million dollars.
