BISHKEK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyzstan will develop a comprehensive plan of action to improve the environment in its capital city, the Kyrgyz government press service reported Wednesday.

The air pollution problem was a topic of discussion at a meeting of Prime Minister Sapar Isakov with heads of relevant state bodies.

The prime minister said that this issue in the capital has become one of the most urgent problems and is being actively discussed among the public.

"We must minimize the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere by tightening control and developing clear standards," Isakov said.

Director of the State Inspectorate for Environmental and Technical Safety Kanatbek Muratbekov said that cars are the key source of air pollution in Bishkek.

The population of Bishkek is about 1 million people, while about 400,000 cars are registered in the city.
