BERLIN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Stuttgart have signed midfielder Erik Thommy from league rivals Augsburg, both Bundesliga clubs confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.

The 23-year-old winger, who received jersey no. 17, decided not to extend his expiring contract at Augsburg as he put pen to paper on a deal with Stuttgart until June 2020.

"He is a technically strong offensive player whom we have been observing for some time. I am convinced that he will quickly reach the next level in his development with us," Stuttgart's sporting manager Michael Reschke said.

Thommy played since 2010 for Augsburg where he made 10 first team appearances. Stuttgart's new arrival was formed in Augsburg and spent the last season at second division side Jahn Regensburg on loan.

"The move to Stuttgart is for me a step into a new environment and a great challenge that I am really looking forward. Now I want quickly become part of the team," Erik Thommy told the club's official homepage.

Newly promoted Stuttgart sit currently on the 13th position of the standings. They encounter Mainz at the 19th round in Bundesliga on Saturday.
