KIEV, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and visiting Canadian Governor General Julie Payette held a meeting on Thursday to discuss bilateral cooperation, Poroshenko's press service said.

While speaking at a joint briefing after the talks in Ukraine's western city of Lviv, Poroshenko said the partnership between the two countries has made a remarkable progress over the past year and brought fruitful results.

He thanked Ottawa for supporting Ukraine's defense sector, particularly for providing instructors to train Ukrainian troops and allowing Canadian exporters to sell weapons to Ukraine.

For her part, Payette said that Canada will continue its support for Ukraine's reforms. She also spoke highly of the cooperation between Ukraine and Canada in the defense sector, saying it is beneficial for both countries.

The Canadian governor general, who is also the country's Commander-in-Chief, arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday on a state visit, which is aimed at showing her support to Canadian Armed Forces members serving on Operation UNIFIER at a military facility in Ukraine's Lviv region.
