MOSCOW, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- A teenage student was detained Friday over suspicion of carrying out an axe attack at a Russian school, which injured five, in the southern city of Ulan Ude, local authorities said.

"A criminal investigation has been launched against a school student on suspicion of committing a crime," a statement of the local investigative committee said Friday.

The suspected student, who is a ninth-grader, attacked seventh-graders with an axe at a school in the village of Sosnovy Bor on the outskirts of Ulan Ude.

The five injured people include four students and a teacher. Three of them are in serious condition, a local healthcare official said.

The suspect also started a fire, which was put out later. About 500 people were evacuated and none were injured in the blaze, authorities said.

Ulan Ude is the capital of the mountainous Buryatia region in eastern Siberia.
