KIEV, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 7,000 Ukrainian servicemen have participated so far in the Operation Orbital UK' s training program for the Ukrainian armed forces, British Ambassador to Ukraine Judith Gough said on Monday.

"Nearly 7,000 Ukrainian personnel trained. The UK remains committed to supporting Ukraine," Gough wrote on Twitter.

The Operation Orbital was launched in February 2015 in response to a request from the Ukrainian authorities.

Under the program, the UK troops provide training courses for Ukrainian servicemen, who fight against pro-independence rebels in Ukraine's eastern regions in a conflict that has killed over 10,000 people since April 2014.

The training program is conducted away from the conflict area and is focused on improving medical, logistics, ground sign awareness and general infantry skills of Ukrainian soldiers.

The insurgents' leadership has strongly objected the presence of foreign military personnel in Ukraine, claiming it undermines a peace process in the country.
