CAIRO, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Egypt welcomed on Thursday the U.S. government's decision to place two Egyptian militant groups on its terror list.

In a press statement, Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the U.S. decision is practically supporting Egypt's war against terrorism which threatens the country's development.

On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department placed Hasm and Liwa Al-Thawra, two Egyptian militant groups, on its terror list.

The decision is considered a positive step in recognizing the threats posed by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated terrorist organizations to Egypt's stability and security, the statement added.

The two groups, which claimed responsibility for dozens of anti-government terror attacks, emerged in 2016 and are classified by the Egyptian police as terror organizations.

Hasm is seen as the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood group.

Egypt has been fighting a wave of terrorism that has killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers since the military toppled Islamist President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.

Terror attacks in Egypt used to be centered in North Sinai before spreading nationwide and targeting the Coptic Christian minority as well. Most of the attacks were claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the regional terror group Islamic State (IS).

The Egyptian military and police have killed hundreds of militants and arrested a similar number of suspects as part of the country's anti-terror war.
