BRUSSELS, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- One of the main suspects in the 2015 Paris terror attacks was evacuated from the Vendin-le-Vieil prison in France to a Belgian court on Monday for an initial trial.
After a tense first day that lasted ten hours, Belgian federal prosecutor announced that a maximum sentence of 20 years will be given to 29-year-old Belgian-born Frenchman Salah Abdeslam, and his accomplice Sofien Ayari.
The two are tried for attempted murder on police officers on March 15, 2016 in the Brussels district of Forest, three days before their arrests.
It is reported that the Belgian prosecutors accused the alleged of "intention to kill in a terrorist manner".
Both refused to stand nor answer any questions from the jury throughout the trial.
Due to Abdeslam lawyer's requesting of a delay for preparation, the president of the Brussels Court of First Instance proposed to postpone the trial to Thursday, the last day of hearing.
After the trial in Belgium, he will face more lengthy judicial proceedings in France, and the French trial is expected to go on for several years.
On Nov. 13, 2015, France suffered the worst terrorist attack in history. Nine murderous assailants attacked several locations in the urban area of Paris in succession, killing some 130 people.
In this attack, Abdeslam, who was responsible for logistics and transporting some of the attackers, originally planned to attack the Stade de France, but eventually gave up his cause and fled to Belgium one day after the attack.
He was captured by Belgian police in a secret hideout at his birth place, Brussels' Molenbeck district, on March 18, 2016, more than four months after his escape from Paris.
Abdeslam was extradited back to France in April, 2016.
