MOSCOW, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Moscow and Tehran will further coordinate their efforts to improve the Astana format aimed at promoting the Syrian peace process, the presidents of the two countries said Tuesday.

According to the Kremlin's press service, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, discussed the prospects of a political settlement of the Syrian crisis during a phone conversation.

"The presidents praised the effective cooperation between Russia, Iran and Turkey within the Astana format and expressed readiness to continue working to further improve this format and to add new concrete issues to its agenda," a Kremlin statement said.

Last year, seven rounds of meetings on the Syrian conflict were held in the Kazakh capital of Astana. These meetings helped facilitate a nationwide ceasefire regime in the war-torn country.

Putin and Rouhani also discussed the outcome of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress recently held in the Russian resort town of Sochi.

"They pointed out that the decisions taken in Sochi are designed to boost a political settlement in Syria based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and help normalize the situation in the region," the statement said.

The resolution calls for a ceasefire and political settlement in Syria.

Last Tuesday, delegates of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress agreed on the main principles of a political settlement in Syria and formed a committee to promote constitutional reform in the country.

Putin and Rouhani also reaffirmed their commitment to the implementation of the Iran nuclear treaty, exchanged views on the crisis in Yemen, and discussed ways to solve the Palestinian problem.
