Austrian population surpasses 8.8 mln at start of 2018

VIENNA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The population of Austria increased by just over 50,000 during 2017 to pass the 8.8 million mark at the start of this year, Statistics Austria revealed in a report on Tuesday.

The 8,823,054 people living in the country at the turn of the new year marks a 0.54 percent increase year-over-year. The population grew less than the year prior, however, with an increase of 74,200 people recorded at the start of 2017.

The largest portion of the population growth was seen in the national capital of Vienna with 43 percent of the total, while all other states except Carinthia also recorded positive growth.

The statistics office said just under 1.4 million people living in Austria on January 1 were foreign nationals, making up 15.8 percent of the total population, a 0.5 percent increase.

Largest source countries for migrants during the course of 2017 was Romania with 10,147 people, followed by Hungary with 6,590 new arrivals, and Syria with 6,444.
