BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- After receiving numbers of complaints on running water turned yellow, the Bruneian government tried to reassure the public that its water is safe to drink.

Brunei's Public Works Department (JKR) at the Ministry of Development on Thursday night announced that in view of the rainy season and floods in some parts of the country, the department has started monitoring the water quality since October 2017.

The department has assured the public that based on the routine monitoring of water samples from several locations in the Brunei-Muara and Tutong districts, the water supply still complies with the World Health Organization (WHO) standard guidelines for drinking water, although there are some complaints about "coloured water".

"However, preventive measures will be continuously upgraded and undertaken to ensure the consistency in water quality within the WHO standard guidelines," JKR said.

Some Bruneians complained on social media that they found yellow or other colour suspensions in the running water after the recent heavy rainfall, which made them hesitated to drink. At the same time, several salesmen of local supermarkets told Xinhua that bottled water has been enjoying good sale recently, with some big-bottle types even out of stock.

According to JKR, the water pipeline cleaning has been carried out continuously in most areas of the two districts.

Despite the preventive measures and assurance of water quality, the department still advised the public to boil their water for drinking.
