NEW DELHI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed and five others injured after a passenger vehicle plunged into a gorge in northern Indian state of Uttarakhand Monday, police said.

The accident occurred in the hilly state's Uttarkashi district, more than 150 km from capital Dehradun.

"The driver lost control of the speeding vehicle while trying to overtake another vehicle, leading to the accident. While five bodies have been fished out of water, five others have been admitted to a local hospital with serious injuries," a senior police official said.

The vehicle was on its way to Lambgaon from Uttarkashi.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said, adding that the driver of the vehicle has been booked for rash and negligent driving.

India has one of the highest numbers of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
