DAMASCUS, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Monday warned of worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria as the country is witnessing worst fightings in the conflicts with hundreds of civilian killed.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria stressed in a statement the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to protect and assist civilians.

Besides hundreds of civilian deaths and injuries, the worsening clashes have resulted in massive displacement and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities.

The statement said that since Feb. 6 when the UN called for an immediate one-month-long cessation of hostilities in Syria, the situation in the country has worsened.

"Sadly, the call for an immediate cessation of hostilities to enable the delivery of humanitarian assistance and the protection of civilians, including the evacuation of the critically ill and wounded, has gone unanswered," the UN statement read.

It added that the escalation is taking its cruelest toll on civilians, everywhere in Syria.

"I am again appealing to all parties, and those with influence over them, to listen to us and to the affected population: end this intolerable human suffering," Al-Za'tari was quoted in the statement as saying.

It mentioned the situation in the Afrin enclave in northern Syria, where the Turkish army and allied Syrian rebel fighters have unleashed an offensive against the Kurdish fighters in that Kurdish-controlled enclave in northern Syria.

The UN said as many as 380 families have so far reached surrounding villages and Aleppo city neighborhoods while thousands of people have been displaced within Afrin.

The statement also mentioned the situation in Hasakah province in northern Syria and the city of Raqqa, where the people have been suffering from the lack of services and unsafe conditions.

It also mentioned the situation in the Rukban camp in southern Syria near Jordan, as civilians remain inaccessible to the humanitarian team in Syria.

In the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region east of Damascus, humanitarian needs are increasing and life-saving aid is urgently required, but people in need have not been reached since late November 2017.

Meanwhile, fighting and retaliatory shelling from all parties are impacting civilians in Eastern Ghouta and Damascus causing scores of deaths and injuries, it added.
