NEW DELHI, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people have been killed and several others injured after a speeding truck crashed into a house and a tea shop in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Wednesday, police said.

The accident occurred in Barela area in Jabalpur, some 300 km from state capital Bhopal.

"The truck first hit a tea stall and then rammed into the residential house after the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle. While 10 people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital," a senior police official said.

Local TV channels reported that an angry mob protested on the road and set on fire a police vehicle to vent out their anger, prompting cops to resort to baton charge to disperse the crowd.

"Top administration and police officials have rushed to the spot," the official said.

While the truck is still stuck inside the house, its driver had fled the spot immediately after the accident. "We have booked the driver for rash and negligent driving and launched a manhunt to track him down," he added.

A probe has also been ordered into the incident, the official said.
