Chinese shares continue to gain on Friday

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices continued to rise on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.63 percent to close at 3,289.02 points.

The smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.04 percent higher at 10,662.79 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses expanded to 332.6 billion yuan (52.38 billion U.S. dollars) from 325.8 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The Shanghai SE 50 Index, which tracks actively traded industry leaders, posted an increase of 0.86 percent.

Shares in the steel, coal mining and paper making sectors led the gains, with Shanghai Prosolar Resources Development Co., Ltd surging to the daily limit of 10 percent.

Shanxi Coking Co., Ltd saw its share price surge 6.53 percent while China Shenhua Energy Company Limited rose 0.99 percent.

Bucking the trend, shares of liquor makers lost. Shares of Shanxi Xinghuacun Fen Wine Factory Co., Ltd and Wuliangye Yibin Co., Ltd went down 1.66 percent and 0.57 percent, respectively.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.53 percent to close at 1,668.83 points.
