Insurgents launch series of attacks in S. Thailand

BANGKOK, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Insurgents have attacked military bases in four different districts of the southern Thai Province of Pattani on Friday night, but no casualties were reported yet.

The first attack happened at about 7:30 p.m. local time, when a group of insurgents opened fire at a base of Royal Thai Marine Corps in Kapho District, followed by another attack on a military base in Mai Kaen District at about 8:10 p.m. local time, according to Thai media Khaosod.

There was also a gun attack on a base of local authorities in Sai Buri District and an arson attack in Mayo District.

At about 8:30 p.m. local time, insurgents opened fire a military base at Mueang Pattani District.

Local authorities have stepped up security measures after the series of attacks.

The three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat in Thailand are home to decades of insurgency which took more than 6,500 lives since 2004.
