JAKARTA, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia on Monday strongly condemned the United States' plan to start moving its embassy to Jerusalem in May, saying that the move would violate United Nations resolutions and derail the peace process based on two-state solution.

Indonesia's foreign ministry made the remarks in its twitter following the meeting of Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir with U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan, who was summoned to the ministry on Monday.

During their meeting, Fachir conveyed to Donovan Indonesia's disapproval over the U.S. latest policy.

The U.S. State Department said on Feb. 23 that the country is planning to open its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem in May, earlier that what has been expected.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said last month during his visit in Israel that the relocation would take place by the end of 2019.

Despite global opposition, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered one of his major campaign promises in December by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel and demanded the State Department develop a plan to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Indonesia then called an extraordinary meeting between leaders of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), which was held in Turkey shortly after Trump's announcement.

After the meeting, the OIC called for Trump to reconsider the plan as it would endanger the ongoing peace process to settle the prolonged disputes between Israel and Palestine.

Indonesia is a steadfast supporter for the establishment of independent state of Palestine with its capital in East Jerusalem. The nation with the world's largest Muslim population supports two-state solution that enables Israeli and Palestinian people live harmoniously side by side.

"Any change in the status of Jerusalem would endanger the peace process and peace itself," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said earlier.
