KIEV, March 7 (Xinhua) -- A Ukrainian army soldier was killed in the country's eastern region of Donbas in the past day despite the new truce, authorities said Wednesday.

The Ukrainian army said in a statement posted on Facebook that pro-independence rebels have violated the two-day-old ceasefire three times in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the rebel-run Lugansk information center, citing the insurgent leadership, said that in the last day the Ukrainian army attacked the rebel positions, causing no deaths or injuries.

On March 2, the Trilateral Contact Group that comprises representatives from Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe reached an agreement on a fresh truce starting from midnight March 5.

The ceasefire has calmed down the hostilities, with the conflicting parties reporting no casualties on the first day of the truce.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine broke out in April 2014 between government and separatist forces, which has left more than 10,000 people killed. There have been dozens of agreements on ceasefire after the conflict erupted.
