Tokyo stocks rise in morning as yen's retreat lifts exports, U.S. tariff concerns ease

TOKYO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks rose Thursday morning as the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar supported exporters while concerns abated somewhat about possible tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum imports.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 158.66 points, or 0.75 percent, from Wednesday to 21,411.38.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 10.61 points, or 0.62 percent, at 1,714.57.

Electric appliance, pharmaceutical, and pulp and paper-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
