VILNIUS, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Three Baltic States and Poland are set to increase their cooperation in the area of common energy, infrastructure projects and strengthening of defense capacities, the prime ministers of the four countries stated on Friday.

The Baltic Council of Ministers, an institution of trilateral intergovernmental cooperation established in 1994, took place in the Lithuanian capital on Friday with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

"I am delighted with the close cooperation between the Baltic States and Poland. We are happy to have achieved a breakthrough in many fields," Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis told reporters at a joint press conference.

The prime ministers focused on joint regional energy projects such as the LitPol energy link, the Baltic gas connection with Poland and Rail Baltica project.

"We try to develop joint energy projects which lead to synchronization of power system and increase of trade in terms of gas transport," Morawiecki said.

Lithuania is a "strategic partner" for Poland, he underscored.

"Synchronization with continental European networks is a great example of the consistent cooperation between our countries," Skvernelis added.

Latvia's Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and Estonian Prime Minister Juris Ratas also took part in the meeting which was the third meeting of Baltic prime ministers in less than a year.

The heads of government discussed the challenges of combining positions on the EU's new multiannual financial framework and regional security issues.
