NEW DELHI, March 12 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 persons have died and over 900 hospitalized over the past one week due to outbreak of gastroenteritis in the Guntur district of India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh, district officials confirmed.

The gastroenteritis occurred due to contamination of drinking water supply in the town, because of negligence on the part of civic officials.

According to the district officials, hospitals in the district have been flooded with patients complaining of vomiting, frequent motions and fever. A door to door survey is underway to ensure cleanliness and good hygiene.

Besides, teams to inspect the water supply pipelines, which are over 30 years old, have been formed to oversee repair of leakages. Special medical camps have been organized to treat the patients in areas where most of the cases are being reported.
