KIEV, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and visiting European Union (EU) foreign affairs and security chief Federica Mogherini met on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine's conflict-hit eastern region of Donbas, the presidential press service said.

During the talks, the parties have discussed the security situation in Donbas and the prospects for the possible deployment of the UN peacekeeping troops in the region, said a statement posted on the Ukrainian presidential website.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Poroshenko said that he has asked Mogherini to send the second mission of the EU's Political and Security Committee (PSC) to Donbas to evaluate the situation on the ground.

The Ukrainian president also thanked the EU for providing support to people living in the conflict-hit region.

For her part, Mogherini said that the EU has already earmarked almost 700 million euro (about 862 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid to people affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

She pledged that the bloc will continue its financial support for Ukraine and its assistance in searching for ways to achieve the full implementation of the Minsk agreements, which are designed to put an end to the confrontation in Donbas.

The armed conflict between Ukrainian government troops and pro-independence insurgents in Donbas region has been underway since April 2014, claiming about 10,000 lives.

The first mission of the EU's PSC visited Donbas in September 2015.

Mogherini, who is also vice president of the European Commission, arrived in Ukraine on Sunday for a two-day visit.
