WINDHOEK, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Villagers in northeastern Namibia have started evacuating after Africa's fourth-longest river, Zambezi, reached official flood stage at 5.67 m, the Hydrological Services of Namibia said on Tuesday.

"The Zambezi River has already started overflowing, thus organizations responsible for activating the contingency plans have started assisting villagers in evacuating. We are already in a dire situation," Deputy Director of Hydrology, Pauline Mufeti, said in a statement.

Localized rainfall as well as water coming from upstream catchments has led to a rise in river levels in the area.
