BRATISLAVA, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Slovak police arrested Italian entrepreneur Antonino Vadala suspected of connection with the Calabrian Mafia in Michalovce in eastern Slovakia on Tuesday.

A court in Venice had issued an European arrest warrant for him, Slovak prosecutor general's office spokesperson Andrea Predajnova said.

The move was a result of cooperation between the prosecutor general and EU juridical cooperation agency Eurojust, following the murders of the investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova.

"An Italian court has asked for the extradition of Vadala to Italy in connection with a drugs-related crime committed by an organized criminal group with transnational activities. The entire action was carried out in the utmost secrecy to prevent an information leak and possible misconduct," said Predajnova.

Vadala was also arrested shortly after the murders of Kuciak and Kusnirova but released one day later. Kuciak's final, unfinished article focused on the activities of Italian nationals allegedly linked to the Calabrian mafia in Slovakia.
