JOHANNESBURG, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) on Tuesday arrested a municipal police officer and five civilians for murder, kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievously bodily harm in Johannesburg.
The six are linked to the assault and murder of a person who was suspected of house breaking and theft. On February 28, 2018 the house of one of the suspects was broken into and a plasma television stolen. On March 1, the community met and apprehended 4 people suspected of housebreaking.
Moses Dlamini, spokesperson of the IPID said the crowd interrogated and tortured the four. He said, "Other housebreaking suspects were assaulted and one had boiling water poured on him. The deceased was admitted at the Far East hospital and he died on March 2, 2018."
Dlamini said one of those who were tortured by the crowd said a municipal police Constable attached to the VIP protection was part of the crowd that assaulted them. It is said the Constable discharged the firearm in the direction of the now deceased.
The six whose age ranges from 21 to 44 years were arrested by the IPID investigators on Tuesday. The six will appear in court soon.
