SYDNEY, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The HMAS Adelaide, the largest ship in the Royal Australian Navy's fleet, cruised into Melbourne on Friday, creating a spectacular scene for onlookers.

After returning from overseas duty, the 230 meter long vessel is in town to resupply this weekend before it continues along the east coast of Australia for training exercises.

In total the warship can carry over 100 ground vehicles, up to 18 helicopters and more than 1000 combat ready troops.

It is the first time the vessel returns to Melbourne after it was fitted out and completed.

Known as a tri-service ship as it operates with navy, army and airforce personal, the HMAS Adelaide specializes in large-scale amphibious assault missions.

However, it also serves as a disaster relief vessel and is regularly used for aid support.
