BRUSSELS, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 13,000 young scouts took part in the 32nd edition of the ‘24 hours cycling’ relay held around the lake in the forestof the bois de la Cambre in Brussels at the weekend.
The theme for this year’s edition is space exploration.
Not only scouts, but members of other youth groups around the country also took part in the competition.
The race starts on Saturday at noon and finished on Sunday at the same time. Each team registers a maximum of two bikes and only young teenagers, aged 12 to 18, are formally allowed to take part in the race. As it’s a relay, no breaks are allowed and teams must continue to race for 24 hours unless they wish to be disqualified.
The competition started in 1984 and is aimed at cultivating young people's interest in sports, while teaching them the important “scouting” values of team work and collective effort.
Whereas some teams enter to win, others prefer dressing up in folklore and have a fun time.
