ROME, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The remains of as many as four or five different people have been discovered in a so-called "well of horrors" near the seaside town of Porto Recanati facing the Adriatic Sea, Italian media reported Thursday.

Some of the remains, which reportedly include broken bones, a skull, a sneaker, and some jewelry, could belong to a 15-year-old girl who went missing in 2010, according to various news reports.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation for murder and tampering with a body as crime scene investigators continue to excavate the site.

The human bones were found near an abandoned cottage within sight of Hotel House, a massive low-income apartment complex built in the 1960s which is currently inhabited by as many as 2,000 immigrants from various countries.

"Investigators... think the bodies may belong to illegal immigrants who were murdered without anyone looking for them," La Repubblica newspaper wrote.

Police have carried out a number of drug busts at Hotel House over the years.
