NEW DELHI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- India's federal government Tuesday withdrew its controversial order of amending the guidelines for accreditation of journalists to curb fake news in various mediums including print and electronic media, following severe criticism.
"Press release titled 'Guidelines for Accreditation of Journalists amended to regulate Fake News' issued on Monday stands withdrawn," a statement issued by the ministry of information and broadcasting as saying.
Local media reports said the decision to withdraw the order was made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Monday, the government said the accreditation of a journalist could be permanently cancelled if it is found generating or propagating fake news.
The order was strongly opposed by Indian journalists who feared it would be used to harass them.
