TIRIN KOT, Afghanistan, April 4 (Xinhua) -- At least two Afghan soldiers were killed and five others wounded after Taliban militants stormed a security forces' camp in restive southern province of Uruzgan overnight, a local official said Wednesday.

Militants numbered hundreds attacked a joint military camp in Khas Uruzgan district Tuesday night, triggering a fierce gunfight which lasted for hours, a provincial government spokesman, Doust Mohammad Nayab, told Xinhua.

The clashes caused two army soldiers killed and five policemen injured, he said.

Several militants were also killed and wounded, but their number could not be exactly specified as the militants evacuated their casualties after the fighting, he added.

Qari Yousf Ahmadi, a purported Taliban spokesman, told local media that the insurgents' fighters attacked four security checkpoints in Uruzgan overnight, killing several security forces.

He claimed that the Taliban also seized amount of weapons and ammunition together with military vehicles besides capturing several soldiers after the fighting.

A provincial official stated that about 20 security force members surrendered to militants as army's air force failed to conduct supportive flight and strike the militants during the bad weather condition.

The Afghan security forces' casualties have risen since the beginning of 2015 when Afghan soldiers and police assumed full responsibilities of security from the U.S. and NATO troops.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes between security forces and Taliban from time to time.
